Redditors Imagine If President Barack Obama Tweeted Like Donald Trump

What *if* President Barack Obama had used the same regularly-offensive and inflammatory tone on Twitter that President-elect Donald Trump does?

It’s probably safe to say that the last eight years could have shaped up a whole lot differently.

With that in mind, Redditors have been imagining how Obama could have reacted on the micro-blogging service to scenarios including the death of al Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden, the 2012 re-election campaign and Trump’s own birther crusade against him.

Some of the best posts we’ve seen so far are below:

A New Year, A New Chapter, A New You

2017-01-16-1484601083-5847386-hrdvsypffasaustinschmid.jpg

The start of the New Year has me thinking about endings, beginnings, and the paths we take to lead us from one chapter to the next. How did you choose your direction? How did you decide to be a botanist, a nurse, or a stay-at-home Dad? For some, life’s course comes naturally–as for those who know what they want to be as early as high school. For others, those decisions come hard–as for those of us who struggle to find our way until a midlife crisis leads us from one place to another.

For me, the certainty that I would wind up as a writer became apparent when I was quite young–though other ideas cropped up along the way. At one point, I dreamed of being a psychiatrist who could help people heal from the disease my mother suffered from. At another, I was sure I would be a horse breeder, spending my life on a farm with all sorts of animals, as I had at summer camp. But the passion for writing won out during my freshman year in college, and when I turned twenty-one I started my first book.

After two decades of writing fiction, at forty years old, I discovered–to my surprise–that I had something important to say about myself. I had a new grasp on all that had happened to me and all that I, at last, understood about my own history. A strong urge to express these revelations and my conclusions about them led me to memoir. I decided to jump genres.

Memoir requires a particular kind of courage–a willingness to open up emotionally and go public with your understanding of your life, rather than putting your experiences and ideas into the mouths of imaginary characters. This sort of writing is a challenge for me in many ways. First and foremost, it’s about “getting over” myself and learning how to be humble. Then there is conquering the fear of being vulnerable with an unknown host of others. Last but not least, there is the complicated matter of writing about people who are so integral to the experiences I am sharing with the world.

2017-01-16-1484581907-2120275-xzw66yayvbaalexwigan.jpg

I get questions from readers about all these issues regularly, and my answer to them is always the same simple truth: I am driven to reach out to others via what I have learned through my own life. I can’t flinch from writing about it. I often receive emails (or sometimes letters) from those who tell me that Searching for Mercy Street helped them to understand their parents better and to forgive the inevitable errors made while raising them. And others write to say that Half in Love has helped them to understand more about depression and suicide, or to move them to seek medical help, or to speak more frankly about their emotions with family–or just to take the risk of reaching out to me, a total stranger who might not answer, even though I seem to be a kindred spirit.

Every one of these reactions makes the fear of baring my soul to the world worthwhile, and this is what fulfills me. It puts into perspective any desire for better sales figures or stellar reviews. In the end, affecting other people with my writing is all that matters to me, and I’m grateful that my life allows me to pursue such a goal.

I have known many who have scrambled for a long time before being able to make a mid-life decision to go in a new direction. One who left a flourishing law practice to write; one who ditched the security of a being a physician to take the risk of becoming a Silicon Valley entrepreneur; one who took years away from her career in journalism to sail the world with her husband and young children; one who decided to become a stay-at-home Dad so that his wife could pursue her dream; one who conquered depression over being childless and adopted instead; one who went back to school at age forty to become a minister.

The changes these people created for themselves required enormous bravery and a willingness to take a leap of faith. I admire them immensely. They gave me the guts to make yet another shift in my professional life, one over which I had been hesitating. Although it was not dissatisfaction that pushed me to leave the genre that I loved, however temporarily, at the outset of 2015 I tackled fiction once again. I chose to start a novel in spite of my insecurity and fear about critics who sometimes judge that my memoirs are my best efforts. But, of course, the decision was softened by the fact that I was lucky enough to be able to continue using my own personal stories in my newsletters, blogs and articles.

We might all look for inspiration, as I did twice, in the examples of the others I’ve written about above–particularly if we are unhappy with wherever life has led us thus far. The advent of a new year is the perfect time to try something fresh. Summon up your courage and unleash whatever it is that fires you up.

Obamacare — Price Transparency

2017-01-16-1484608675-8465249-sudipboseintheer2.jpg

By Dr. Sudip Bose

Jan. 16, 2017 — One thing is certain about the future of Obamacare, and that is that it will change under a Donald Trump presidency. And from President-elect Trump’s recent statements, it will happen much sooner rather than later.

Insurance premiums for Obamacare plans as well as other plans outside the exchange have gone up significantly in 2017 — 100 percent or more in some states. Deductibles also have changed significantly. People going in for health care treatment or to refill prescriptions are being hit by enormous up-front bills because of the rise of deductibles. For example, a Nevada man went to refill prescriptions and was socked with an $ 1,800 bill because his 2017 deductible had jumped to $ 2,600. Who can afford that kind of spike?

Younger, healthier people still are opting out of Obamacare and instead are willing to pay the annual fine because it will cost them much less money. However, if you have a family you need to cover, how much of a struggle would it be to have to pay $ 500 or more a month and also be faced with a $ 5,000 deductible? Maximum out of pocket expenses are capped by Obamacare, but the cap is $ 7,150 for individual coverage, $ 14,300 for family coverage. Those figures do not include subsidies, which will bring overall costs down, but neither do they include premiums paid, which would amount to thousands of dollars more annually.

Also, there’s less choice. Fewer and fewer health care plans are opting into the Obamacare exchange. One-fifth of consumers can only pick plans from one insurer.

Transparency

All the king’s horses and all the king’s men still can’t tell you what you get for all that. What sort of transparency is there for the coverage that you get for all those dollars? How much will a procedure cost and how much will it pay out? Let’s look at a hypothetical, which happens in reality hundreds of times a day across the country: Let’s say you suffer a broken leg in an accident. You need to have it set, have pins put in it to stabilize the leg and help it heal, have a cast put on it, and have follow up X-rays as well as months of physical therapy to rehabilitate and strengthen the leg to get it back to where it was before the accident.

How much will all that cost? It depends. There’s transparency for you.

The ultimate cost depends on a variety of factors — your plan, your doctors, what state you live in, what zip code you’re in, what complications you might have because of the injury, and many other factors. You remember my restaurant analogy in a previous post, right? The one where you go to a restaurant to eat, you pay your initial bill but then get hit by other bills in the following days, weeks and months sent to you by restaurant workers who weren’t on your plan. You didn’t know going in that you had to pay the maitre’d, the bus boy, the sous chef and the fry cook separately. You get the idea.

Have you ever been to a restaurant, paid what you thought was your bill, left, and then weeks later gotten a half-dozen or so bills in the mail related to your service at that restaurant? No? You say you haven’t? Perhaps you got a bill from the sous chef, who was an independent contractor not working directly for the restaurant? Maybe one from the food expediter, and then the one from the pastry chef, the maitre’d who escorted you to your table, the busboy who cleaned and set the table before you sat down and then cleared dishes after each course and filled water glasses? No? And just think — some of those people were in your preferred network of restaurant service providers (and you got a good deal on the cost of their services), but some weren’t (and you were charged what looks like an exorbitant amount).

So how do we get a cost structure that works?

Competition

A key concept to implement to help bring costs down is opening state borders and allowing competition nationwide. At the same time, we need to stop tying health care insurance to employment. These two single advances will foster competition and will spark innovation in the insurance industry and allow those insurers to offer innovative products to benefit consumers. The open market. It will have a much bigger impact on controlling costs.

Perhaps early on, plans may not be available in all states, simply because an insurer is not yet operating within that state. But as long as a plan that is offered and purchased complies with state requirements, any provider should be able to offer plans in any state. This will spur growth in the insurance industry, again through robust competition, which will drive insurance providers to grow their businesses in states they haven’t operated in yet. By allowing that kind of competition, insurance plan premiums will drop and consumer satisfaction will go up.

What I just outlined will not be easy, nor will it be widely accepted. There will be push-back from state departments of insurance, there will be push-back from insurance companies, there will be push-back politically, there will be push-back from businesses, and there will even be push-back from consumers. Everyone will talk about the negative impact of these two ideas, and there will be complications to work through. But if we truly want to get costs under control, these things must happen. And when we focus on the benefits — less expensive premiums, lower deductibles, tax breaks for individuals purchasing health care in both pre-tax Health Savings Accounts and deductions for premiums (instead of giving those tax breaks to employers, as they do now) and expanding the pool of network doctors — in the long run it will be worth it. It will change the way we do business in the health care arena, but that would be a worthwhile endeavor.

Let’s imagine this: You go into a hospital for tests at the age of 50. You have $ 60,000 saved in your HSA after the government, your employer, and you have been contributing pretax dollars. You’re diagnosed with needing a coronary artery stent operation, which runs between $ 11,000 and $ 36,000. Your wife, other family members and friends are ready to contribute to your care from their HSAs if needed. (Remember in a previous article I suggested others should have the ability to contribute to someone’s HSA.) How well covered do you feel now?

Think about the nationwide leveling effect those two concepts would provide.

This will be hard to accomplish. That’s OK. No great thing that has been done has been without great effort, setbacks and failures along the way. But we absolutely must figure out a better way to manage our health care in this country, because what we have now is proving itself to be unsustainable already.

Coverage

In conjunction with this is the transparency issue mentioned previously. Exactly what is covered and to what degree must be spelled out. Cost estimates, without medical complications, must be given. For example, if you were told you needed a coronary artery stent placement, you should know what kind of cost that is (quoted without complications, because a medical complication with this procedure can obviously escalate costs).

Getting back to my restaurant analogy, who would knowingly do business with a restaurant, or an auto repair shop, or a health care provider, or any business for that matter, where you didn’t know the costs of the goods or services being provided? Not I, and not many people, I would suspect. Even in an auto repair shop, you get an estimate up front, before any work is done.

We need simplified, complete and total transparency into the costs of our care when we
enter the hospital for a scheduled procedure, or even for emergency treatment. There
should be no hidden costs that a patient gets hit with weeks or months after the fact, unless there were unforeseen extenuating circumstances.

Multiplying the factors of price transparency, opening up and allowing full competition across state lines, and putting the power of pre-tax and tax deductible benefits in the pocket of consumers and patients instead of their employers will help solve an equation that has been confounding politicians for decades.

We must set our sights on what works best for the consumer and the patient — accessible, top-quality health care at a reasonable cost — and do what is needed to make that happen.

Let’s get government and middlemen out of the way and focus on the center of the epicenter – the doctor-patient relationship. Let’s give the patient full control of his health and wallet.

How To Recover From Blogger Burnout In 3 Easy Ways

What Happens When You Step Away

What happens when you’ve slowed down on social media to truly reflect where you’re heading with your business?

What happens when you lose the flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter anymore?

What happens when you feel stuck?

You haven’t spoken up in over 2 months and we all know that is forever in the online world. You’ve not posted on all your social media platforms, You haven’t recorded a video, You’ve not showed up in your own FB group! What happens to your self-esteem and your confidence when these actions take place. Well, I should really ask what happens to your self-esteem and confidence when nothing has taken place or when you are sucked into this idea that you have to be online 24-7 in order to make a dollar? Well, it can be pretty depressing to know or should I rather say “think” that you have to start all over.

“Truth is being on social media all the time does not equate to running a business or conducting business activity”

You didn’t always feel this way…You actually had some rhyme or reason to what you were doing months before but somehow you’ve experienced something called burnout. That’s what it is. I hate this term burnout. It feels so cliche, it feels like I crashed and burned and there’s no return. There’s no getting back up. But really with all these emotions and thoughts there is light at the end of the tunnel. There is a lesson to be learned and taught to others.

So…let me revisit those questions and share with you my answer.

What can happen when you’ve slowed down on social media?

For starters you get to reflect where you were/are heading with your business… So in my book, amazing things can happen! You begin to have a new sense of confidence and clarity. You can find a new sense of commitment to your goals and what you stand for in your business. You can begin to find your own voice again. You know what when you are constantly online being bombarded by everyone else’s messages you can begin to sound like or imitate someone you really admire. But guess what? You aren’t that person so this time away can bring about a uniqueness in you, and difference in you where you begin to stand out more in your own niche in this sea of online businesses.

What can happen when you lose your flow of your posting schedule and you don’t even know where to start?

Realistically you haven’t lost your flow…you had it scheduled once before. If you scheduled it before I’m sure you can refer back to your old schedule but this time with a breath of fresh ideas and opinions. You can find it on a piece of paper a word document, one of your planners. Start looking back and re-evaluating what you were doing before the burnout. You may just be in a bit of a funk…YOU personally and internally may not be in a flow but that’s ok. Begin to reconnect with your creator first, with the God who created you and listen in to your spirit and where He would have you begin. He’s given you a message for others and you know you gotta get it out to the masses. Start small. Start with an inspirational photo, feel free to reintroduce yourself. Do whatever feels right to you but whatever you do never give up because you lost your flow or feel like you don’t know where to start. I can help with that…I hope this blog post is helping with that now.

What happens when you think your voice won’t matter?

Well honey, this is more of an internal thing. If you are feeling like your voice won’t matter then guess what…it won’t. It’s not for you to determine how your story will connect with others. It’s not for you to give a consensus on the wonderful message imparted within you. Nope you don’t get to judge your message before sharing with others.

When I stepped outside of my own comfort zone and began to share my story and share what I stood for, guess what. I got an astounding…”That was powerful”. This was a mindset shift that I was sharing with other women in my group.

Did you know that I re-edited and re-edited and stressed over this message for days before I put it out. Your voice is your message and when you share it just know if you’ve touched one person you’ve done your job!!!

Conclusion

Whether you are recovering from “Burn Out” or currently experiencing it as you read this post, it’s important to remember that business is a journey and there is no race to the finish line. Brands continually evolve and grow just like we do as people. Sometimes that growth may feel stunted and other times you may experience a growth spurt. But most importantly, building a business is a journey through personal development.

Learning more about yourself and allowing your commitment to shine through regardless of where you think you should be in business are important steps to showing up and serving others through your business.

Don’t Repeal Me, Please!

I am luckier than most. After 20 years of having multiple sclerosis I am still relatively healthy. I have a spot on my foot which is mildly numb most of the time and markedly numb when I have an exacerbation. This is damage I got from not treating an exacerbation with steroid therapy. Sometimes when I am dancing I can feel weakness in my legs, but I still dance. I will always dance. Heat and I have a love/hate relationship. I love a sauna in January. That first sweat is such a cleansing feeling. But a prolonged heat wave in summer will sap me like an iPhone battery. I have extreme vertigo whenever I ride a canoe, an amusement ride, or a swing at the playground with my son. These are things I no longer do. They do not effect my quality of life. Life has so much more to offer than amusement rides.

I can go through long periods of remission. Sometimes years. There are times when I am strong. I can haul 50 lb. bales of hay, show a cow who is boss. But when life is stressful, like say after a divorce or economic insecurity, the stress can be too much and I get sick.

It is my pre-existing condition. There have been times when I have not had health insurance. When the divorce papers were signed by the judge I lost the health insurance I had with my husband. I was only working a part time job. My state, Maine, had not expanded medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. I fell into this bubble. One that with just a small bump in income of a couple thousand dollars would qualify me for the ACA.

Sometimes when I feel an exacerbation start I have this feeling in my head that someone else is driving this body. Simple tasks such as shoveling a car out in winter will feel like epic adventures requiring more effort than this body is capable of. Thinking becomes clouded. The only upside I can see is the extreme cleaning my house will have after five days of IV cortico-steroid therapy. Lemonade.

So it was in a March, after a long winter of extreme weather, car troubles, and a steady eye on my bottom line that I could feel the disjointed arrival of an exacerbation. I had no health insurance. A call to my neurologist set up the IV therapy. I arranged to have the medication before I went to work every day. I have a job that does not pay sick time. When I showed up at the registration desk at the hospital they helped me sign up for uncompensated care. The debt from the steroids would have been unmanageable on a 15,000 a year income. So, yes, your tax dollars paid for my medicine. Thank you.

It would be another six months of working multiple jobs before I finally got a raise in pay and enough hours of work to qualify for the ACA. For my family of two that magic number is 18,000 a year. I just squeak by. If I make just a little less than this I can lose my health insurance again because Maine still has a governor who will not expand medicaid. I signed up for a silver plan with a 250.00 deductible. I received a subsidy which means that my monthly payment was 10.00 a month. I have re-enrolled for 2017 and that monthly payment has gone up to 45.00 a month. Still affordable.

But all this may just be moot.

I want to trust that we have leaders that are going to make sure that I can get the care I need without the worry of crushing debt. I want to trust that when, not if, I get sick again I can treat the illness and forestall any damage it may do to my nervous system, so I can keep walking, so I can see.

I know for insurance companies, members of congress, think tanks, and governors my story is just a number. It probably does not make a blip on their radar. When people become numbers to the policy makers the real life consequences must seem abstract. My life is so far removed from the desk that pens these laws. But a repeal without a reasonable replacement seems like poor political decision making to me. I follow the news everyday. I watch a Congress dismantle the very thing that has insured an element of economic security to a life I have worked hard to rebuild after divorce. The glee with which this has happened does not promote much confidence or trust. I want to trust we have leaders. I want to trust. I’m just not sure I can.

2017-01-16-1484561649-2144105-HuffPost3.jpg

Mexico is in a political crisis again. The sudden announcement of a 15-20% hike in gasoline prices has triggered protests, blockades and general social unrest at a scale not seen since late 2014 when the president, Enrique Peña Nieto, was saddled by the back to back blows of the Ayotzinapa kidnappings and “Casa Blanca” scandal. That it happens at the beginning of what is shaping up to be an extremely complicated year is even more troubling. Already the economy is showing signs of a deepening slowdown and inflation is creeping up. Most worryingly, however, is that the fallout from Trump’s electoral victory is starting to be felt even before he has taken office, as evidenced by the decision of US carmaker Ford to cancel a $ 1.6 billion investment in Mexico. Be it by threats or fiscal incentives, it is likely that more will follow.

Popular opposition to the gasoline price hike partly obeys personal economic logic. Mexico is an extremely car-dependant society and given low wages, the cost of gasoline is an important component of the consumer goods basket. Gasoline prices in Mexico have traditionally been regulated by the government and until 2015, were gradually raised on a monthly basis (known colloquially as the gasolinazos) through the Impuesto Especial sobre Productos y Servicios (IEPS) a “special” tax on certain goods including fuel. However, liberalization of gasoline prices was one of the pillars of the vaunted energy reform in order to align domestic prices with global ones. Peña Nieto himself in 2015 promised that there would be no more gasolinazos thanks to the energy reform, a promise that has now been widely mocked on social media. That consumers will face not only this price hike but the natural rise in market prices from February onward (which will possibly mean a liter of gas 30% more expensive by year end), plus the inevitable inflation that will follow adds insult to injury.

Cheap gasoline or cheap tax income?

The IEPS was originally established in 1980 as a package of sin taxes set on cigarettes, alcohol, gambling among others, and most recently expanded to include junk food. Gasoline and diesel was also included, both as a sort of Pigovian tax (to compensate the negative externalities of excessive vehicle use) as well as a price smoothing mechanism. Conceivably, when oil prices would spike the IEPS on fuel would automatically transform into a subsidy but it would take a quarter century before prices rose to a level where this was the case: it was only in 2006 when intake from the IEPS on fuel would be negative, that is, when it became a subsidy. The subsidy was biggest in 2008 when oil prices reached record highs: it accounted for around 1.8% of GDP, quite an astronomical amount considering total non-oil tax intake that year was a paltry 8.1% of GDP. It remained negative (aside from a brief and minuscule return to surplus in 2009) until 2014 when oil prices once against slumped. By 2015 it was a tax again, bringing in 1.2% of GDP. Just in the first ten months of 2016, the IEPS has brought in 1.4%.

Critics of the government’s policy of regulated gasoline and diesel prices due to the wasteful (and regressive) subsidy that has resulted over the past decade has forgotten that throughout most of the IEPS’s life, it was not a subsidy; it was a tax. And that as a price smoothing mechanism it performed exactly as it was supposed to, helping Mexican consumers pay below-market prices to compensate paying above-market prices while oil prices were low. Throughout the whole of its 36 year existence, the IEPS has provided a net 23.3% of GDP to the public coffers, equivalent to nearly three years of tax intake – quite a significant amount. The government’s claim that Mexican consumers have been spoiled by low gasoline prices when in fact it has been the main beneficiary of the IEPS is disingenuous.

Mexican gasoline is not competitive

One of the government’s recurrent arguments against the IEPS, as a subsidy, has been that Mexican gasoline prices are low by global averages. While Mexican prices are noticeably higher than the US as well as most other major oil producers, it is well below European prices as well as that of most non-oil producers. Even with the latest price hike into account, Mexicans pay 84 cents per liter, below the global average of around a dollar. Finance minister José Antonio Meade in his defense of the price hike claimed that Mexican prices were still “among the most competitive” on this basis. But contrary to his claim, Mexicans do pay considerably more when adjusting for income. According to Bloomberg, fuel costs amount to nearly 3.4% of the average Mexican’s real income, almost double that of the average American and over four times that of the average Swiss. It tied with South Africa for the highest share among the 60 countries surveyed. As for actually being competitive, there’s a reason nearly 70% of Mexican gasoline is imported from the US, given the country’s modest refining capacity (less than a tenth of the US) and inefficient distribution network.

Are Mexicans to blame for being so gasoline dependent? Car usage is certainly an aspirational phenomenon not just in Mexico but among most developing economies. However, urbanization is arguably the single most important factor influencing car usage here; Mexican cities are simply not designed for mass transit. Even Mexico City, the city with the most developed public transport network in the country, the extensive Metro system does not have a single stop in many of the city’s dispersed business districts and accessing some like Santa Fé (Mexico City’s version of Canary Wharf in London or La Defense in Paris) is all but impossible without a car. The Metrobus, a rapid bus system, has helped plug some gaps but neglect of the normal bus network means that it suffers from overcrowding. Indeed the normal bus network cannot be described in any other term than woeful. It is composed primarily of microbuses, operated as individual concessions with no central authority. Most of the microbuses are in an appalling state and suffer from frequent mass muggings, with the routes outside the city limits in the Estado de Mexico particularly dangerous. With this in mind, can anyone blame the middle and upper classes (and a good part of the working class too) for what they can to avoid public transportation?

Was there really no alternative?

In a press conference defending the move, Peña Nieto claimed that the gasoline price hike was the only alternative to raise resources; the only other option would have been to reduce social spending. Governments frequently need to make difficult and unpopular decisions, particularly when it comes to taxation. But the macroeconomic imperative to enact such a move appears puzzling, particularly at the beginning of such a critical year and with public approval of the government at rock bottom.
Mexico is not facing a budgetary crisis, at least according to the government’s own fiscal estimates. Tax revenue has consistently overshot estimates since the fiscal reform was implemented in 2014, oil prices are forecast to rise slightly, and the economy is not in recessionary territory even though nobody expects 2017 will be a bountiful year even by the current administration’s underwhelming track record. It follows that either the government grossly underestimated the social discontent that a gasoline price hike could have had and therefore assumed it would be an easy way to raise extra cash without incurring debt; or it genuinely fears a major shortfall in 2017. If the latter case is true, then the government was prepared to assume the political cost of such a policy even when there’s a key election later in the year (in the PRI bastion of the Estado de México, Mexico’s most populated state) and even when the man announcing the policy, finance minister José Antonio Meade, is a possible presidential hopeful for 2018. The implicit assumption of this scenario is also that the government believes the economy is much weaker than it’s ready to admit.

Between the two scenarios, the first is the most likely one. And the key factor is debt. The Peña Nieto administration has had a disappointing fiscal track record, consistently running up deficits of over 3%, and swelling the debt stock to over 50% of GDP, having inherited it at less than 38%. This rise in the debt stock has also consistently overshot estimates: every single budgetary fiscal forecast since Peña Nieto took office has assumed that the following year would be the last before debt levels would begin easing (and the 2017 budget is no exception). For a time, the government was able to brush off criticism of its debt policy through the promise of the structural reforms. But with the economic slowdown now in its fourth year, and its fiscal credibility showing cracks, the government likely fears the game is up. Few economists will believe fiscal consolidation is a realistic prospect unless there is a cushion of extra revenue to finance this year’s budget (which envisages eliminating the primary deficit) without significantly raising the debt stock.

The gasolinazo therefore appears to be a last resort to avoid that which the government most fears: a credit ratings downgrade. It should count itself lucky that one has not taken place yet; both Moody’s and Standard & Poor’s put Mexico on negative watch in 2016. At the EIU we’ve long believed that Mexico’s fiscal and macroeconomic fundamentals do not support its current credit rating (The Economist Intelligence Unit’s country risk service downgraded Mexico as early as 2015), nor did they justify the country’s upgrade by all three major agencies back in 2013-14 as a result of the euphoria over the structural reforms. A downgrade is long overdue. Given the administration’s hyper-sensitivity to negative foreign perceptions (particularly form investors), one can only imagine the panic in the halls of Los Pinos that will ensue when the downgrade comes.

The impact on 2018

Could Mexico have obtained these revenues in any other way? Perhaps not. Another year of austerity could have been an option but again, electoral considerations could be coming into play and the PRI may not be willing to shut the tap on spending. But the decision to risk such an unpopular move as well as a refusal to back down even when realizing the scale of public objection is telling of the lack of sensitivity – if not outright contempt – that this administration has had on public opinion under the belief that eventually, all political crises in Mexico fizzle out (as was the case back in 2014). Indeed the PRI went on to have a strong showing in the 2015 mid-terms which goes to show that arriving unelectable to the 2018 presidential election is not a foregone conclusion post-gasolinazo. But with the economy looking weaker and Trump now also in the equation, the odds of another six years in power are increasingly remote. The thought on Peña Nieto’s mind will be whether defending a credit rating was worth it.

Where is HOME?

A good friend of mine shared a question posed by guitarist, Chris Wood on her Facebook page:

“Bob Dylan described eloquently how his music has been the quest to get home. Now as much as ever feels like a good time to ask you; what feels like home to you? Are you there already or do you still have a way to go?”

On the same day, singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran released a new song called “Castle on the Hill”. The song retraces the singer’s youth, returning to his former home and recalling his memories en route.

I grew up in a small rural town called Penrith in Cumbria, England. It’s a tourist town situated on the edge of the Lake District National Park. I return periodically but I’ve realised over the years how my fond memories are stored in music rather than the place itself.

I consider Penrith to be my home but every time I return I feel more distant, more disconnected. Maybe what I search for is my youth – to remember Penrith as I did back then and feel the way the town made me feel then – but lately it seems empty, soulless. The only way I can get that feeling back is by listening to music that reminds me of when it was my home. That works, then I miss it, then it feels like home again.

When my mind traces back through all the places I’ve lived, they each have songs associated with the memories. In that sense, each place feels like home. There’s a nostalgic pull to every dwelling for different reasons and different songs. For some, scents can also trigger memories of places they consider home.

But where is home? Is it the house or town you grew up in or the house or town where you raised your family? Maybe it’s the place you felt most loved or perhaps the place you gave most love to. How does our heart identify home?

For many, home is more than a memory. For refugees, home is their country; for the street children in Brazil and India, home is wherever they feel safest.

So are we all constantly striving to find home? Do creative people, like Bob Dylan, find sanctuary in their work?

I’ve spent hours pondering an answer to Chris Wood’s question and feel no definitive place as my home. The house where I live now, and watched my family grow, is my home but Penrith is my home town. Maybe I am still on that quest to go home, but I fear that home was a moment in time…

I would be interested in hearing your thoughts on what you consider home and why, so please comment below.

These 6 Kids’ Drawings Of Kindness Nail The Best Thing About It

“Kids are intrinsically kind”, says Dr. Michael Tomasello, a professor of developmental psychology at Duke University. They are also, as parents or teachers can attest, prone to bouts of egocentric behavior, riding the complex ups and downs of on-again/off-again compassion over the course of their development.

While greater compassion can, and should, be fostered in kids ― whether through the acknowledgement of a kind act, or through modeling desired behaviour ― there is something incredible about seeing the wheels turn in a child’s head as they make a connection for themselves to the organic reward of kindness that goes beyond the “should” of being kind.

To demonstrate the impact of this connection, we partnered with Dignity Health, and asked a handful of kids ages four to eleven to draw acts of kindness that they had recently encountered. What they drew, and what they said about the power of kindness, is both heartwarming and illuminating. See for yourself!

More than a century of experience and years of scientific research have shown that medicine is more effective when delivered with a kind heart. Dignity Health believes that humankindness holds the power to heal the mind, body, and spirit.

The Great Kindness Challenge, of which Dignity Health has been a supporter for four years, has worked to create a culture of kindness in elementary, middle, and high school students worldwide since 2008. This year’s challenge takes place worldwide January 23 – 27.

Beyond the River of the Sun

Beyond the River of the Sun

Intrigue rocks the world of the 17th century Indians of La Florida, as they struggle for survival under Spanish dominance. A new paramount chief emerges. He is a Christian. Soon the Franciscan missionaries are welcomed where they have feared to go, beyond the River of the Sun into the Timucua provinces of Potano, Utina, Yustaga, and even further west to the land of the Apalachee. The friars gain thousands of converts, but even among the faithful the seeds of discontent are sown, as the priests trample upon the old ways: the legends and ceremonies and beliefs that have served the Indians well for ten thousand years. The priests seek only to save pagan souls. The Spanish governor and soldiers would change the Indians into beasts of burden, to carry food and supplies two hundred miles to the starving colony of San Augustin. Thousands die, struck down by diseases carried by the Europeans, the heat, and the weight of their burdens. The aging Spirit Warrior, Atichiciolo-Iri, seeks to foment rebellion. He is laughed at and scorned by his people, until a head-strong and insensitive Spanish governor makes a tragic miscalculation of how much the Indians will endure. A fuse is lit, and the resulting wildfire of passion and violence may scorch them all.

Perpetual Political War

The Trump slump has begun. Trump has less public support than any President-elect on record. Only 44 percent of Americans say they approve of Trump’s handling of the presidential transition, according to Gallup. That number is going down. It was 48 percent a month ago.

Compare that with George W. Bush, who took office in January 2001 after the fiercely disputed Florida recount. Bush started out with 61 percent support. Bill Clinton won the 1992 election with 43 percent of the popular vote in a three-way split with President George H.W. Bush and Ross Perot. Clinton’s transition rating: 68 percent approval.

Honeymoon? Forget it. Only 37 percent of Americans have a favorable opinion of Trump in this month’s Quinnipiac poll. Most Americans don’t like Trump.

There is only one way Trump can survive: perpetual political war. He got elected by dividing the country. It was not exactly the old division, left versus right. Trump provoked a populist-elitist division by fiercely attacking the cosmopolitan ruling class. “There is nothing that the political establishment will not do, no lie that they won’t tell, to hold their prestige and power at your expense,” he told a rally in Florida in October.

Resentment of intellectuals and educated elites is an old theme in U.S. politics, going all the way back to Andrew Jackson. Trump exploited it relentlessly. He ended up carrying non-college educated white voters by better than two to one.

The cultural elite’s response to Trump? Contempt. Actress Meryl Streep denounced Trump as a “bully” for his “instinct to humiliate” the less fortunate. Trump’s response? Defiance. He called Streep “one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood” and “a Hillary flunky who lost big.” Contempt versus defiance. That is likely to be the prevailing mode of political discourse for the next four years.

Given the interference in the election by Russia and the FBI, Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) told NBC News, “I don’t see this President-elect as a legitimate President.” Trump’s response via Twitter: “Congressman John Lewis should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime-infested) rather than falsely complaining about the election results.”

A former Hillary Clinton campaign strategist said on MSNBC, “What would be great is if [Trump] started conducting himself in a way that’s consistent with the manner of all preceding Presidents. . . . Stop hurling insults. Stop hurling tweets.” Trump’s response? A defiant tweet: “What are Hillary Clinton’s people complaining about with respect to the FBI? Based on the information they had, she should never have been allowed to run — guilty as hell.”

For Trump to survive, two conditions must hold. Republicans have to keep their majorities in Congress, and Trump’s supporters have to stand by him. His supporters can threaten any Republican in Congress who opposes or even criticizes the President with a serious primary challenge.

Trump knows how to rally his army. He has weaponized social media. Twitter nurtures populism. It enables Trump to bypass the news media and communicate directly with his people, who regard the media as a despised elite. As President, Trump has to continue tweeting to keep his populist following on a war footing.

A revenge cycle is underway in American politics. The minute Barack Obama took office in 2009, conservatives organized a resistance movement. The Tea Party sprang into existence a few weeks after Obama’s inauguration. Its mission was to oppose and obstruct everything Obama tried to do.

Now a resistance movement is emerging among progressive Democrats. Its mission is to everything Trump tries to do. Big city Democratic mayors say they will refuse to cooperate with efforts to deport immigrants who seek refuge in their cities. Democratic state officials are organizing to do the same thing Republican state officials did when Obama was President — go to court to challenge the federal government’s constitutional authority to pass laws they find objectionable.

The California legislature is retaining Eric Holder, Obama’s former attorney general, to represent them in legal confrontations with the Trump Administration. “Having the former attorney general of the United States brings us a lot of firepower in order to prepare to safeguard the values of the people of California,” the Democratic leader of the state senate said.

The Democratic National Committee is setting up a “war room” to fight President Trump — a research and communications operation aimed at rallying opposition to his policies, exposing his conflicts of interest and challenging his factual distortions.

You thought the 2016 campaign was over? It was actually the opening salvo of a war that’s likely to go on for years. Trump thrives on division. The Trump slump doesn’t threaten him as long as his army is ready to fight at his command.

12 Things Every ‘Type A’ Person Wants You To Know

2017-01-12-1484257821-2930246-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP.jpeg

Robert Frost once said, “The brain is a wonderful organ; it starts working the moment you get up in the morning and does not stop until you get into the office.” He certainly wasn’t thinking about Type A people when he said that. They barrel into the office like they’re racing for a pot of gold, and they never seem to lose momentum. It’s as if they’re driven by a motor that never shuts off.

We each have our own understanding of what it means to have a Type A personality, but what does this term really mean and where did it come from? It actually started in a waiting room shared by a pair of cardiologists. The doctors noticed that their chairs didn’t have wear on the backs as expected–the wear was only visible on the front edge of the seats and the armrests, suggesting that patients were literally waiting on the edge of their seats, ready to jump up the second their names were called.

So, the cardiologists–Doctors Friedman and Rosenman–wanted to find out if the strange wear pattern on their chairs was because impatient people are more prone to heart disease. They discovered that their hunch was correct. They also found that people’s personalities tend to lean in one of two directions, which they labeled Type A and Type B.

2017-01-12-1484257884-1847761-12ThingsEveryTypeAPersonWantsYouToKnowHP2.jpeg

Most think of Type A people as driven and highly strung and Type B people as carefree and even-keeled, but there’s so much more to it. Type As, in particular, are often misunderstood, as we just don’t understand the motivation behind their behavior.

To fully grasp what it means to be Type A, you need to hear it from the horse’s mouth. Don’t take my word for it–let’s see what they have to say:

1. We believe that winning is the only option.
We’re really hard on ourselves. Our desire to do our best often morphs into a desire to be the best. After all, if someone else does something better than us, then we mustn’t have been trying hard enough, right? This ensures that even the most mundane activities become a competition.

2. We live and die by our goals.
We don’t do anything “just because.” There’s an end aim for everything. That morning cup of coffee? The goal is to wake up. Half an hour of Pokemon Go at lunch? It’s about squeezing in some exercise and capturing more Pokemon than our friend down the hall. Heaven help anyone who slows us down or gets in our way. We’re nothing if we don’t reach our goals.

3. We’re always stressed.
Achieving our goals is so important to us that we often get stressed out about our progress. It’s that specter of wasted time or missed opportunities hanging over our heads that gets us all riled up, which can be really hard on our emotional intelligence (EQ).

4. We squeeze something into every possible moment. It may seem hypocritical that we’re sometimes late even though the rest of the time we’re impatiently drumming our fingers, waiting for meetings to start on time. The problem is that we try to squeeze a task into every possible minute, and sometimes we overdo it. In our determination to avoid downtime, we sometimes inadvertently create downtime for other people.

5. We want you to get to the point.
Skip the long preamble; if we have questions, we’ll ask. There’s no need to waste time on the setup when you have something important to tell us–just tell us. The theme here is efficiency; we’re interested in hearing the main points so we can begin taking action.

6. We hate to wait. We don’t hate being stuck at a red light or cooling our heels in a doctor’s waiting room because we think we’re too good to wait. We just like to be efficient with our time and don’t like things getting in our way. Every minute spent waiting is a minute we could have spent doing something productive. It’s a minute that we’ll never get back.

7. We’re conscientious.
Like “later,” “good enough” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Things are either right or they’re wrong. And they always, always have to be right. No matter what we’re doing, we care too much to settle for mediocrity.

8. We multitask. We’re not being rude, and we’re not bored. We just have a sense that the value of our day is measured by how much we get done, and we accomplish more when we do two (or more!) things at once.

9. We have a tough time relaxing. Relaxation isn’t a measurable goal, and it feels like a waste of time when nothing is getting done. It’s very difficult for us to sit around and “just be”; instead, we prefer to be actively “becoming” whatever lies at the end of our current ambition. Anything else amounts to lost time.

10. We have an unrealistic sense of urgency. From our perspective, “now” is the only time that exists. There’s no sense in putting something off till another time. While that’s often a good thing, we tend to give trivial issues a greater sense of urgency than they deserve.

11. We follow a schedule. Our time is carefully orchestrated so that each day we accomplish what we intended. Again like “later,” “whenever” isn’t part of our vocabulary. Everything gets scheduled and added to lists, and we take great satisfaction in ticking all the boxes.

12. We’re restless. Our motors are always running, so when we have to idle, that excess energy manifests in various nervous habits, such as fidgeting or biting our nails. Don’t worry, we’re not freaking out. This is normal behavior for us.

Bringing It All Together

We know that we can be awfully hard on everybody, but we’re even harder on ourselves. This may be difficult to see because no one else is privy to the perfectionist that’s goading or berating our every move inside our heads. Just know this: We care–we care a lot–and we really are sorry if our personality makes us hard to get along with sometimes.

What other characteristics set Type A people apart? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Sephora Is Selling An Eyeshadow Named ‘Druggie’. Seriously.

There are moments when it’s important to marshal as much evidence as possible to back up an argument. And then there are moments like this.

Sephora is selling a new shade of eyeshadow called “Druggie.

The company describes the shade as “metallic purple with violet shift,” and it is part of Urban Decay’s “Afterdark” eyeshadow palette. Now, we get that fashion is an art form, even in a globally commodified context, and far be it for us to stomp on creative expression.

But by the time you have finished reading this article, it’s likely that somebody in the United States will have died of an opioid overdose. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 500 people, many of them young, are dying every week. Every 15 minutes, a new dead body is turning up in an emergency room, making orphans of children, breaking the hearts of parents and grandparents, the scourge of an entire generation.

Responding to complaints, Sephora has apologized but has not said it will drop the name. “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. Please DM us for more information,” the company tweeted Friday in reply to a protest.

When reached by The Huffington Post, Sephora had this to say: “We deeply apologize to anyone who was offended by the name of this shade. We would never seek to do that. The shade was in a limited edition palette and was not planned to be re-ordered.”

HuffPost has reached out to Urban Decay and is awaiting comment.

Ryan Hampton, a recovery advocate for Facing Addiction told HuffPost that, while the apology is “a step in the right direction, Sephora clearly needs an education on substance use disorders. The recovery community is standing at the ready, and it’s our hope that their CEO not only pulls this product immediately but joins the national fight to face addiction.”

Still, Urban Decay’s ‘Druggie’ eyeshadow points out a big problem in the fashion and beauty industries, which have long histories of glamorizing addiction, even in the midst of the nation’s drug epidemic.

Hampton told HuffPost that Sephora said it would be meeting next week to decide how to handle the situation.

In the meantime, here’s a petition to help nudge them in the right direction.

Stephen Colbert Suggests Other Tribute Acts For Donald Trump’s Inauguration

Stephen Colbert believes it’s “a perfect fit” that a Bruce Springsteen tribute band is set to perform at Donald Trump’s inauguration party.

“Who better to sing for a reality show president than a man pretending to be the Boss?” the “Late Show” host said Friday, in reference to the B-Street Band’s planned appearance at the Garden State Presidential Inaugural Gala in Washington D.C. on Jan. 19.

After suggesting some of the songs that the group could play in honor of the soon-to-be president (“Born To Run Dad’s Company?”), the late night host then recommended other cover bands who may be called on to perform on the day.

Maroon 4 or Justlike Bieber, anyone?

Winter

Winter is a three-month period of time that represents a pause in the activity of life. Great lakes, ponds, and streams freeze over; the earth grows hard and unreceptive. Tree sap stops flowing. Even the air becomes dense, slow to move, and heat stealing. Yet, not everything is as it appears to be!

The pervasive stillness and deep silence of winter are powers every bit as great as are the explosive forces of spring and summer, only different. After all, what is a glacier but a vast frozen river crawling its way through time? Both are forms of water whose unstoppable might can carve their way through solid rock! So, how can we channel this power of winter and use it to let go of whatever stands between us and the higher life we desire?

Winter is the time of the year when the forces of nature assume their most passive form. But we are discovering here that passive does not mean powerless! Consider the micro-pause between each beat of the heart. Is the heart less alive, made less potent for the brief rest it takes in its own beating? Of course not! In each such moment of its repose we could just as easily say that it is gathering itself for its next pulsation. In other words, its temporary passive state is actually a measured act of preparation. So it is with the “heart” of winter.

The better we understand this unique power of being passive–and how it serves as the secret consort of all things active–the more we grow in the faith we need to be wisely passive toward whatever fears remain in us about letting go of our false self. This is why, during the dark days of winter, we should take time each day–as often as possible–to quietly return to the living Light that dwells in the center of ourselves.

By gathering our attention in this way, and bringing the whole of ourselves into the heart of this interior stillness, we not only collect our own forces, as nature herself is doing, but much more: in this deliberate act of gathering ourselves–and for the conscious sense of quiet contentment we find within it–we are also being released from the false idea that the source of our strength and security can be found somewhere outside us.

The great French author, philosopher, and Nobel Prize winner, Albert Camus, knew the power of this truth now revealed. He also realized its liberating potential. In the following carefully chosen words, see how beautifully he tells us not to fear any season of life wherein we find ourselves feeling empty, alone, or without any Light in our life. He writes: “In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me lay an invincible summer.”

Once we start to see, to know in our innermost heart, that life itself is already complete, we can let go of whatever–or whoever–would have us believe otherwise.

Old attachments and their long-standing aches are now seen for being what they have always been: appendages of days gone by, worthless to the Higher Self we have agreed to become and by whose stillness we realize this need for a wholly new valuation of our own soul.

Now is the season to die to discontent, to withdraw our consent to live with any thoughts or feelings that would convince us it’s necessary to live in conflict or confusion.

The winter season can be the most challenging in terms of learning to channel its powers to help us let go. But, we may also have this timeless assurance: we are really created to enter into the perfect stillness from which we came. And for our return home–by entering into the bare infinity that is the center of our True Self–we arrive where we have always longed to be … without ever having had to set out. Here we make this last, glad discovery: the task of letting go, of separating ourselves from who and what we need no longer be, has already been done for us.

‘Fake News’ Is Totally Becoming The Go-To Excuse For 2017

Haven’t paid your rent? Not handed in your assignment? Don’t want to pay off your student loan?

Don’t worry. From now on, you can apparently just blame everything and anything that you don’t agree with or want to do on “fake news” ― the term that’s fast becoming the most convenient get-out of 2017.

If it’s good enough for President-elect Donald Trump, who inaccurately used the phrase to blast CNN during his press conference on Wednesday, then it’s good enough for these Twitter users who’ve been detailing the awkward situations they’ll be able to escape from by simply uttering those two magical words.

Just don’t let “Late Night” host Seth Meyers hear you saying it.

Four Uncommon Ways to Clear Your Mind and Make Big Decisions

What are some tips for battling decision-fatigue? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Jenny Blake, Author of PIVOT: The Only Move That Matters is Your Next One, on Quora.

Decision-fatigue refers to the phenomenon that, like willpower, our ability to make decisions throughout the day diminishes without proper recharging. When mid-Pivot and asking life’s biggest questions, we are often overwhelmed by smaller decisions and things that might not have registered on our radar in the past. Or conversely, we’re so bogged down by small day-to-day decisions that we don’t have the space to ask bigger Pivot questions about what we really want and what next steps would resonate most.

To refresh your mind, I recommend the following:

  • Don’t ask the same giant questions every day (ie: Should I quit my job?). Give yourself a period of time where you don’t have to decide at all, perhaps while you’re researching options. Revisit the decision at specific intervals of your choosing, but not on a daily monkey-mind basis.
  • Create routines for as much as you can in your life – morning routines, scheduling exercise for the same recurring days/times, evening wind down rituals. What recharges you? The more you can create routines around these things, the less you will find yourself debating what to do when throughout the day (gobbling up precious mental bandwidth).
  • Write your questions down.
  • Go with your gut! We actually do know the answer to more than we think – on decisions large and small. If you find yourself debating unproductively, ask: what does my gut say?

Cancer Survivor Tells Paul Ryan: ‘I’d Be Dead’ Without Obamacare

A man who survived cancer despite a grim diagnosis challenged House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) on his efforts to repeal Obamacare.

“Because of the Affordable Care Act, I’m standing here today,” Jeff Jeans told Ryan at a CNN town hall event on Thursday. Jeans identified himself as a longtime Republican who once opposed the law. But then, he said, that changed when he was given six weeks to live and needed health insurance to get treatment.

As a small business owner, Jeans didn’t get health insurance through work like many people do. And with a pre-existing condition, it’s unlikely he would have been able to buy coverage in the pre-Obamacare U.S.

“I want to thank President Obama from the bottom of my heart because I’d be dead if it weren’t for him,” he said.

Ryan told Jeans that Republicans intend to replace President Barack Obama’s signature health law “with something better,” though their plans largely remain a mystery.

The Senate on Wednesday night took a major step towards repealing Obamacare, passing a budget resolution that made way for Congress to strip funding for the law. The House will take up the resolution on Friday.

Ikaria: Lessons on Food, Life, and Longevity from the Greek Island Where People Forget to Die

The remote and lush island of Ikaria in the northeastern Aegean is home to one of the longest-living populations on the planet, making it a "blue zone." Much of this has been attributed to Ikaria's stress-free lifestyle and Mediterranean diet-daily naps, frequent sex, a little fish and meat, free-flowing wine, mindless exercise like walking and gardening, hyper-local food, strong friendships, and a deep-rooted disregard for the clock. No one knows the Ikarian lifestyle better than Chef Diane Koch

A Nation of Nations

An incisive look at immigration, assimilation, and national identity” (Kirkus Reviews) and the landmark immigration law that transformed the face of the nation more than fifty years ago, as told through the stories of immigrant families in one suburban county in Virginia. In the years since the 1965 Immigration and Nationality Act, the foreign-born population of the United States has tripled. Americans today are vastly more diverse than ever. They look different, speak different languages, practice different religions, eat different foods, and enjoy different cultures. In 1950, Fairfax County, Virginia, was ninety percent white, ten percent African-American, with a little more than one hundred families who were “other.” Currently the Anglo white population is less than fifty percent, and there are families of Asian, African, Middle Eastern, and Latin American origin living all over the county. “In A Nation of Nations, National Public Radio correspondent Tom Gjelten brings these changes to life” (The Wall Street Journal), following a few immigrants to Fairfax County over recent decades as they gradually “Americanize.” Hailing from Korea, Bolivia, and Libya, the families included illustrate common immigrant themes: friction between minorities, economic competition and entrepreneurship, and racial and cultural stereotyping. It’s been half a century since the Immigration and Nationality Act changed the landscape of America, and no book has assessed the impact or importance of this law as A Nation of Nations. With these “powerful human stories…Gjelten has produced a compelling and informative account of the impact of the 1965 reforms, one that is indispensable reading at a time when anti-immigrant demagoguery has again found its way onto the main stage of political discourse” (The Washington Post).

Exxon Mobil Told To Hand Over Decades Of Climate Documents In Major Legal Blow

Exxon Mobil encountered a major setback on Wednesday when a Massachusetts judge ordered the oil company to turn over 40 years of documents related to climate change.

The ruling represents a huge win for the state’s attorney general Maura Healey, who is investigating how much Exxon knew about the link between fossil fuels and climate change and if it intentionally hid such information from the public.

“Exxon must now end its obstructive tactics and come clean about whether it misled Massachusetts consumers and investors about what it knew about climate change, its causes and effects,” Healey said in a statement provided to The Boston Globe.

An Exxon spokesperson told the Globe it was reviewing the decision.

Healey began the probe last year alongside New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman after several outlets published major investigations alleging Exxon knew about climate change for decades and intentionally worked to sow doubt among the public.

The oil company retaliated with a lawsuit against Healey after she announced her investigation, claiming the attorney general was politically motivated and that she was acting outside her jurisdiction

“[Healey and Schneiderman] are incapable of impartial investigations and are attempting to silence political opponents who disagree on the appropriate policies to address climate change,” the company said in October, according to The Associated Press.

That case, based in Texas, is still pending.

… it’s good to see that the courts may yet hold Exxon responsible for the damage it’s done to this planet and to our democracy.
350.org co-founder Bill McKibben

The Massachusetts ruling was particularly timely because it occurred on the same day former Exxon CEO Rex Tillerson refused to say during the first day of his confirmation hearing to become secretary of state whether the company knew about the climate phenomenon.

“Since I’m no longer with Exxon Mobil, I can’t speak on their behalf,” said Tillerson, who worked at the oil giant for 41 years and retired in December. “The question would have to be put to Exxon Mobil.”

“Do you lack knowledge to answer my questions or are you refusing to answer my question?” Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) asked.

“A little of both,” Tillerson replied.

But despite the former CEO’s maneuvering, environmentalists hailed Wednesday’s legal ruling and the timing of the decision.

“Rex Tillerson may be trying to make his getaway, but it’s good to see that the courts may yet hold Exxon responsible for the damage it’s done to this planet and to our democracy,” 350.org co-founder Bill McKibben said in a statement.

“This is a huge victory for democracy and uncovering the truth about Exxon’s decades of deception and with Rex Tillerson poised to be the next U.S. Secretary of State, the timing couldn’t be better,” said Tamar Lawrence-Samuel, policy director for the watchdog group Corporate Accountability International, in a statement.

Relationships That Have Roots are the Anchors in Our Lives

By Carolyn Massiah
UCF Forum columnist

The view in my backyard is a conservation area full of various types of trees. As the seasons pass, the trees lose their leaves and even some of their branches, but the trees remain in large part due to their sturdy roots.

To the side of my house is a concrete light pole. It doesn’t have any leaves and branches, obviously, but it is more susceptible to being blown down during a violent storm because it lacks the strong roots that mature trees have to anchor them through a storm.

When I compare and contrast the tree and the pole, I know I would much rather be a tree.

Both trees and light poles stand above the blanket of shrubs and bushes below. However, this is where the similarities end.

Many light poles are inorganic entities of concrete or metal, created through some form of human intervention. The shape and size in which these poles are created will forever be their shape and size as inorganic entities will not change during their existence unless there is additional intervention.

Trees, on the other hand, are organic. They are living organisms that continually change. They will lose and gain leaves and branches but they will also grow and mature throughout their existence. Continual growth and development is what I want for my own life. This is why I would rather be a tree than a light pole.

Unfortunately, positive growth sometimes must come from negative changes. Each year trees weather the change of seasons. With those changes in season, leaves come and they go and sometimes there may be seasons when the trees may not have any leaves at all on their branches.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that become attached to you as much as leaves are attached to branches. However, as the seasons change in our lives those people may disappear. Sometimes it seems several disappear at once and you are left bare much like trees in winter. For whatever reasons, those individuals were only meant to be in your life for a season. Yes, it hurts when those who you thought were going to stay forever leave your life before you are ready, but it is the nature of our organic lives.

Unfortunately, you never know how strong any branch will be until it is tested in the most violent of storms. Some branches appear thick and sturdy while they may actually be hollow or rotten to the core. If you step out on the branch for support because of its sturdy appearance, you might be disappointed and shocked when that branch does not support you but breaks and hurts you instead.

The same can be said for our own lives. There are people that we have relied upon and with whom we have built a long-term relationship. We have truly let them into our lives. However, as the weight of whatever burden you need bared by them increases, that friend gives under the load and breaks away from you in a permanent and irrevocable manner. Yes, it hurts but just as leaves come for a reason during a season, branches are there for those life-long lessons that we will take with us long after the branches have broken and been swept away. That is the nature of our organic lives.

So based on this, you might now be wondering why I would choose to be a tree instead of a pole. One word: roots!

Because trees are organic living creatures their roots continue to grow and strengthen as the tree grows and matures. When a storm comes, the roots anchor trees and allow trees to bend but not break in the storm.

Poles do not have that same anchor support. That is why we see more poles than trees down after severe hurricanes.

The same can be said for our own lives. Think about those individuals in your life that have been your anchor and support through the good and the bad. Often, much like a tree’s roots, those individuals do all of their work out of the view of others with no need of public acknowledgement. They are the blessings that we cannot overlook in our lives.

After comparing and contrasting the two, if I had to choose I would rather be a tree if it means that I will continue to have the blessings of roots just waiting to support me and feed me as I work to develop and mature throughout my existence.

Senate Republicans Take The First Big Step Toward Repealing Obamacare

Senate Republicans have taken the first big step toward repealing Obamacare, setting in motion a legislative process that could undo the largest expansion of government in a generation and leave more than 20 million Americans without health insurance.

In a mostly party-line vote that took place early on Thursday, the Senate passed a special budget resolution that instructs committees to write legislation stripping the health care law of its funding and spending provisions, effectively ending Obamacare’s coverage expansion.

Budget resolutions don’t need presidential signatures, since they are basically internal congressional messages to committees. But they still require approval from both chambers, which means this one still needs a yes vote from the House.

That is likely, though not quite certain, to happen within the next few days.

Passing this resolution is a critical first step in rescinding Obamacare because it would allow Congress to consider legislation through the budget “reconciliation” process, with its special rules that make it impossible for Democrats to block action in the Senate by wielding the filibuster.

That means Republicans could pass legislation even with their small, 52-seat majority in the Senate, and then send the final bill to President-elect Donald Trump. The incoming president reiterated during a Wednesday press conference his belief that “Obamacare is a complete and total disaster” because of rising premiums and declining insurance options for people buying their own coverage in some parts of the country.

The Senate vote was 51 to 48, with only Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) breaking ranks with his party to vote against the resolution. And it took place with relatively little legislative drama ― despite rumblings, from earlier in the week by a dozen Republican senators anxious about the prospect of voting to repeal the health care law without prior agreement on what would take its place.

One of the senators making those arguments was Sen. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), who introduced an amendment on Tuesday that stipulated the committees would have until March to finish their work. He withdrew the amendment before Thursday’s vote.

But Corker said he had assurances that the committees could take time to craft a replacement, according to Politico. And throughout the day, Republicans were still raising questions about a hasty repeal effort ― chief among them, what would happen to the more than 20 million people who now get insurance because of Obamacare?

GOP leaders have tried to assure these members by promising an “orderly transition” of two or three years, during which elements of Obamacare would remain in place so that people currently insured would keep their coverage.

But lawmakers including Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.), who is chairman of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, have indicated they want to see the plans ― both for the transition and afterward ― before voting on a repeal.

How the debate proceeds from here is uncertain. The most unexpected Obamacare news of the day actually happened at Trump’s Wednesday press conferencewhen he issued his first extended remarks on the health care law since December.

Trump didn’t endorse the leadership strategy of a quick repeal vote, with a replacement to come later. But he also didn’t side with those Republicans who want to push back both votes until later. Instead, he suggested the two votes should happen simultaneously and quickly.

That would not seem to be possible, given that Republicans have not yet reached a consensus on even the broad outlines of an Obamacare alternative ― and translating an outline into actual legislation, with legal language and dollar figures, could take weeks if not months.

The big issue looming over the GOP effort is that most of the Republicans, including Trump, have promised their schemes would provide better coverage than Obamacare does. But in part because conservative schemes typically envision substantially less federal spending, the end result of repeal ― with or without a replacement ― is almost certain to be fewer people with insurance, less comprehensive coverage for those who have it, or some blend of the two.

Democrats did their best to make this point, right up until the final vote when, during the roll call, they took turns giving their reasons for voting against the resolution.

“You are stealing health care from Americans ― I vote no,” Sen. Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.) said.

“Because health care shouldn’t be just for the healthy and wealthy ― I vote no,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.).

Thursday’s vote is a reminder of how high a priority Republicans put on the repeal of Obamacare, and how deeply unpopular the program is with conservative voters and even some non-conservative voters. But polls have suggested most Americans either don’t want to repeal the law or, at the very least, want to see what the alternative would be first.

Russia Denies It Has Compromising Information On Donald Trump

MOSCOW (Reuters) – The Kremlin said on Wednesday it was “total nonsense” that Russian officials had assembled a file of compromising information on U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Two U.S. officials said on Tuesday evening that the heads of four U.S. intelligence agencies had last week presented Trump with classified documents which included unverified claims that Russian intelligence operatives had compromising information about him.

Addressing reporters on a conference call, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the dossier containing the claims was a hoax which had been dreamt up to further harm U.S.-Russia relations, which are already at their lowest level since the Cold War.

“It is an attempt to damage our bilateral relations. It is pulp fiction,” said Peskov, who also roundly dismissed as false assertions in the dossier that he himself was heavily involved in running a Russian campaign to undermine defeated presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

“You have to react to this with a certain humor, but there’s also a sad side to this. Hysteria is being whipped up to maintain a political witch hunt.”

Peskov said the Kremlin did not engage in compiling compromising dossiers on anyone and was focused on building relations with Russia’s foreign partners instead.

On Tuesday evening, Trump dismissed the reports that Russia had compromising information on him. “FAKE NEWS – A TOTAL POLITICAL WITCH HUNT!” he wrote in a Twitter post.

Asked to respond to the prospect of new U.S. sanctions affecting Russia’s oil and gas sector, Peskov said such measures, if they happened, would damage Russia, bilateral ties, and the global economy.

The Russian energy sector would definitely get compensation if such sanctions were imposed, he added.

Peskov said the Kremlin was unfazed by reports that Trump’s pick for secretary of state, Rex Tillerson, would say at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday that Russia posed a danger.

It has previously praised Tillerson, who has experience of working with top Russian officials in the oil sector.

Peskov said the Kremlin stood by its assessment of Tillerson as someone who was willing to listen and was constructive, but was aware he was likely to be a tough operator too.

“We understand that Tillerson will continue to be quite tough in pursuing his line,” said Peskov, saying the Kremlin was not wearing rose-tinted glasses when it came to the former U.S. oilman.

The Year of Courage

2017-01-10-1484073658-7328710-Courage.jpg

Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one’s courage.
―Anais Nin

Years ago I gave up New Year’s Resolutions, because they always fell apart for me by March! Now instead I choose a theme each year – something I want to ponder, practice, and live into.

2016 was the year of noticing. I practiced noticing all year and got better and better at it – noticing small things and large patterns, how beautiful aging faces really are, and what people leave unsaid.

I’ve named 2017 the year of courage.

As we grow older, courage sometimes shows up in ways that are different from how it showed up in our younger years. For example, it took courage for my friend Joy to decide to stop downhill skiing. An excellent skier, she has loved skiing. And she’s past 70 and notices her reflexes have slowed down. She felt vulnerable and less confident the last couple of times she skiied. So – does her decision not to ski shrink or expand her life? I asked Joy. Her response was interesting. She said that although she thought it would shrink it, she now feels it actually expanded it. A good friend of hers fell and broke a leg skiing last year. Recovery has been slow and painful. “I had the courage to stop before that was me,” she said. And she’s recently started cross-country skiing, which she’d never tried before. “It’s a whole new skill,” she told me. “And I’m loving learning something new.”

Maybe it’s also true that as we age, the courage we need is different – not physical daring-type courage, but emotional and relational. Think of the courage to keep learning, to acknowledge when we don’t know, to see the humanity in someone we disagree with, to forgive.

I can already think of many ways I’m hoping to have courage this year:

  • To say “yes” to opportunities, challenges, life
  • To say “no” when I don’t want to do something
  • Not to be so sure I’m right about things
  • To listen deeply to people who have different views of things
  • To take care of myself, including eating less sugar
  • To create and participate in things that are a lot of fun
  • To stretch myself – keep learning
  • To speak up in the face of prejudice and injustice
  • To speak openly of spiritual matters
  • To love people deeply and well

Anne Lamott calls me to find new depths of courage:

“If there is one door in the castle you have been told not to go through, you must.
Otherwise, you’ll just be rearranging furniture in rooms you’ve already been in.”

What would be a good theme for your 2017? My friend Donna named her year “Simplify.” Before choosing courage, I considered curiosity, generosity and love. Somehow this quote tipped me to courage: “Without courage, wisdom bears no fruit.” ―Baltasar Gracian

COACHING QUESTIONS

  1. Consider choosing a theme for 2017.
  2. What will your theme for the new year be?
  3. How might it make 2017 a better year?
  4. Have a meaningful, fulfilling New Year!

Deconstructing Stigma: Picturing the Beauty in Life

Editor’s note: Deconstructing Stigma: A Change in Thought Can Change a Life is a public awareness campaign developed by McLean Hospital to spark conversation not only about behavioral and mental health but also about the stigma that surrounds it. The campaign features compelling stories from people across the United States who have been affected by mental illness, including Alan’s story below.

McLean Hospital Guest Blogger
Alan S.

2017-01-11-1484099394-9768309-AlanS37blog.jpgDespite attempts to love and care for my mother, I never felt valued growing up. As a youth, I tried to take my own life. I wound up in a series of foster homes.

It has been a battle since I was 11 just to be here.

Generations of my family have battled mental illness. My grandfather, noted Red Sox centerfielder Jimmy Piersall, became the first sports figure to publicly declare his fight with bipolar disorder. I shared that diagnosis by the time I was 27.

There were manic episodes in my life where I could jump off a building as high as the sky and land on my feet, followed by depressive states where I was sadder than sad.

I would go on to try various medications to control my illness, but without success. In 2010, determined to break the cycle and take control of my life, I bought a gym membership and a pair of running shoes. I dropped 75 pounds. I began using a camera to capture the raw, beautiful emotions of the world as I see them.

You’ve got to find a way to like yourself. That’s a beginning. I’ve learned an active body builds a calmer mind.

Now I lead a community fitness group and have taken to social media to inspire others with positive thoughts, nutrition and fitness tips, and my zest for life.

The Lord is going to have to take me kicking and screaming now. I want to be a beacon of light and hope for others.

Congress Quietly Passes New Rule Allowing House Members To Hide Records From Ethics Probes

Just when you thought ethics standards couldn’t get much worse on Capitol Hill… It’s emerged that the House GOP quietly changed a rule last week to allow members to keep their records hidden from ethics or criminal investigations.

The tweak allows politicians to conceal any information members produce — even suspicious expenditures and budgets — if the Office of Congressional Ethics or the Department of Justice investigates them for criminal activity, the Center for Responsive Politics reports.

The change essentially makes a member of Congress the owner and sole controller of any records he or she creates, regardless of whether those documents touch on a public interest, such as use of taxpayer funds or the commission of a crime.

“Records created, generated, or received by the congressional office of a Member … are exclusively the personal property of the individual member … and such Member … has control over such records,” the regulation states.

The change granting records control to members was passed without much notice amid news of a plan to gut the independence of the Office of Congressional Ethics, which caused a public outcry but failed to pass.

Under the new regulation, a lawmaker being investigated for misuse of taxpayer funds, for example, might now assert the privilege to withhold spending records from law enforcement authorities. Had that measure existed earlier, certain accounts might not have been accessible for corruption investigations that resulted in charges against members of Congress.

“Why on earth would Congress now create barriers to investigation and subpoenas of a member’s spending records?” Center for Responsive Politics Sheila Krumholz executive director said to the Fiscal Times Monday. “This only benefits the incumbent politicians who passed this rule and those who would flout it, not the system and certainly not the public.”

Allowing House members to block access to their records destroys the “critical element of independent oversight” over government records and members’ activities, she added.

New Hampshire Democratic Rep. Carol Shea-Porter attacked House Republicans for seeking “far less transparency.”

Over the years, several House members have been investigated for criminal activity related to misuse of funds, and have been forced to resign or charged with crimes.

The Office of Congressional Ethics is currently reviewing Rep. Duncan Hunter (R-Calif.) over allegations that he siphoned off tens of thousands of dollars of campaign funds for personal use ― including paying for his children’s private school tuition and trips to Disneyland, jewelry, video games and sporting goods. The San Diego Union-Tribune reported last week that Hunter used campaign funds to pay for $ 600 in airline fees to fly a pet rabbit.

Four Things You Need to Stop Putting Off

What are the things you should do before it is too late? originally appeared on Quorathe knowledge sharing network where compelling questions are answered by people with unique insights.

Answer by Nicolas Cole, Author & Entrepreneur, on Quora:

Here are four things you should do before it’s too late.

Create That Project

Whatever project you want to create, create it now. Because the part of you that wants to create it right now will not last forever. The book you write at 25 will be very different than the book you write at 30, and 35, and 40, and so on. As we change, our perspectives and feelings change as well. Create what you want to create right now, and capture this moment in time.

Love That Person

Do you connect with someone? Do you like someone? Even if you know, you won’t marry this person, or spend the rest of your life with this person, let yourself love them. Ride that wave together. You never know where that wave will take you–who knows, maybe you will end up together after all. But trust how you feel right now because that feeling won’t last forever, and the opportunity will be gone as fast as it presented itself.

Take That Leap

Is right now a unique time in your life? Do you have the chance to do something special–if you take the leap? What happens if you don’t take the leap? When will you ever get this chance again? Opportunities present themselves at the right times. They are never perfect–an opportunity is called an opportunity because it asks you to take a risk yourself.

Work That Skill

Guess what? If you don’t work whatever it is you want to get better at today, then you won’t be any better at it tomorrow. And if you continue to make the decision not to get better today, then tomorrow will never come. And before you know it, that skill either will no longer interest you, or you will not be able to (physically, mentally, etc.) learn that skill’s foundation. Learn it now.

France Bans Spanking Kids With New Law

A new law in France is making it illegal to spank children.

On Dec. 22, the “Egalité et citoyenneté” (”Equality and citizenship”) bill officially passed in parliament. The bill included a section that bans parents from inflicting punishment that is “cruel, degrading, or humiliating” and explicitly forbids corporal punishment.

This section, which was added to the bill in July, makes corporal punishment a civil offense, so parents would not face criminal charges. But lawmakers and advocates believe it is an important symbolic change.

“It sets forth a clear principle, which should be repeated to fathers and mothers and inform their future behavior,” stated the explanatory memorandum to the amendment.

“This law is a very strong symbolic act to make parents understand just how all violence can be harmful for the child,” French anti-spanking advocate Dr. Gilles Lazimi told the Telegraph. “Above all, it removes the notion of a threshold: There is no small or big violence. There is violence, full stop.”

The topic of corporal violence and specifically spanking has been the subject of much research. A study published in the Journal of Family Psychology in 2016 analyzed 50 years of research involving over 160,000 children and found that kids who were spanked were more likely to exhibit antisocial behavior, aggression, cognitive difficulties and mental health issues. They were also more likely to defy their parents.

Once the law goes into effect, France will become the 52nd country to ban corporal punishment.

The United States has no laws forbidding corporal punishment in the home, though 31 states have passed laws banning it in schools.

Right-Wing Radio Host Bryan Fischer Says Anyone Opposed To Christianity Is A ‘Traitor’

Conservative radio host Bryan Fischer said last week that anyone who opposes Christianity is a “traitor” to America.

Fischer began his program by citing George Washington’s farewell address, in which the nation’s first president linked religion and morality to patriotism, as “proof” that anyone who doesn’t follow Jesus Christ can’t be a patriot.

Then, the “Focal Point” host took it even further.

“You want to find a traitor to your country, find somebody who is actively working to oppose Christianity and oppose the public acknowledgment of the Ten Commandments,” Fischer said in a clip posted online by Right Wing Watch. “You are looking, my friend, right there at an American traitor.”

His show is produced by American Family Radio, which is part of the American Family Association. The Southern Poverty Law Center lists the AFA as a hate group due to its radical anti-LGBT views.

Fischer has previously said that gay boy scouts create “sexual tension” on camping trips, that gay NFL players would create “sexual tension” in locker rooms and that gays in the military will create “sexual tension” in the armed forces.

Things They Didn’t Tell Us at My Fancy High School

2017-01-08-1483915002-3317669-ScreenShot20170108at2.04.33PM.png

I’ll admit it, I was blessed to go to one of those super-posh, elite boys’ schools where someone with gray hair stands up in chapel and says “Gentlemen, someday you will rule the world.” Or something like that. I couldn’t entirely hear him over my handheld electronic football game. And mumbled recitations of the Shema.

But some people clearly took it seriously. Just in my time there, we had the guy who runs ABC, the Mayor of Los Angeles, the creator of Mad Men. We only had 129 boys in our graduating class and one has already had a studio movie made about his life story. And he wasn’t even a serial killer. Did I mention, I went to school in Los Angeles not Central Florida? Though in Central Florida’s defense, there was one movie about a murderer from my school. But it starred Judd Nelson, so all in all, we’ve had a pretty decent homicidal maniac-free run.

Our class slogan was “Greatness!’ Yes, we had a class slogan. I always thought it should be “Where Smart Boys Go to Feel Stupid.” But I can also see where theirs is slightly more aspirational. That said, even I left there with the wholly unearned cockiness of youth, convinced that the adult world would naturally bow before us. The following are some observations of what my adulthood to this point has actually been like. It’s the things they didn’t teach us (and we may never have left high school if they had.)

You will fail at life. Often. Often spectacularly. Sometimes even in Deadline Hollywood with a photo so unflattering you’d think the story was about exotic chin-removing techniques.

You will work hard, try your best, and sometimes still get fired. Occasionally, by friends. Sometimes for not having been on Friends. But you will have a Zen approach to being fired and never think about it again. I’m sorry. I meant to say, you will think about it all the time, dream about it more, and even momentarily consider purchasing an online voodoo doll-making kit from the set decorator of Gilligan’s Island.

Someday, you will start going to more funerals than weddings. This is not long after you’d gotten used to the idea that you were going to more weddings than Taco Tuesdays.

You will cry over the notion of your kids leaving not long after they arrive. Then again, when it’s actually close. Then again, when watching the end of Toy Story 3.

You will always think you are the same age as the cutest girl at Starbucks. At least until she says, “Excuse me, Sir, I think you dropped your banana.”

You will remember the names of every peripheral character from every Brady Bunch episode and all the ’75 Cincinnati Reds, but have no recollection of the name of the person you met with half an hour ago.

You may reach a point where you are more concerned with finding your voice or protecting your legacy than making money. While still being acutely aware that neither voice nor legacy pay for juice boxes or a condo in Tarzana.

You will never wear your high school letterman’s jacket again, except to a 50’s costume party. Also, you’ll never go to a 50’s costume party.

There is no moment where you definitively feel “I’ve made it!”

There is no moment where you definitively feel “I’m a grown up.” In fact, no matter how old your kids get, you’re still always secretly wondering when the real grown ups are going to get there. If not to take over, at least to drop off the handbook.

You can have almost no friends in grade school and 25,000 Twitter followers now and both feel roughly the same.

Unless you graduated from Trump University, nobody cares where you went to college. Believe me, I try to wedge Brown into sentences that have nothing to do with Brown. Like that. See, you didn’t care.

Over time, your body will change. You will spend a lot of time trying to get back to your high school weight. You will spend a lot of time trying to get back to Meat Loaf’s high school weight. At some point, you may even accept that you probably won’t play shirtless frisbee in an Abercrombie ad.

Along similar lines, you may find yourself trapped in your own wet suit in a public beach bathroom. You may also momentarily consider blowing a drifter to get you out of said wet suit. The first time. The second time is more common beach courtesy. Right? That’s what he told me.

Friends will marry people you don’t like. Friends will marry people you like too much. Classmates will die way younger than predicted by any actuarial chart or senior page quotes about living forever.

The girlfriend you profess eternal love to on your senior page will almost definitely not be your girlfriend by the time you see the proofs of your senior page.

Your real soulmate will never be who you thought it was going to be.

But unlike all romantic comedies and Nicholas Sparks books, the success of your marriage is less a function of how cute you met or the intensity of your passion. And way more a function of whether you remembered to go to Trader Joe’s or unload the dishwasher.

Your back may someday be so tight you sleep on a heating pad and a gallon of Ben-Gay. And no, you didn’t suffer a ski accident. Or even a pickle-jar opening mishap.

You’ll learn that how people present themselves to the world or on social media isn’t always how they feel inside. Often it’s the polar opposite. You may learn that, too.

Your professional life may feel like high school. But not in the sense that hard work equals good grades equals selective college of your choice. No, more in the cool, popular crowd still gets rewarded for being cool and popular and having nice hair. And for living in the Palisades and vacationing with development execs.

Similarly, people who never opened a book in high school will make exponentially more money than you will. Never underestimate the words “family real estate.”

You may, at some point, suffer from depression, severe depression or Pennant Fever. As important as the names Martha Quinn and Kajagoogoo were in your teen years, the names Lexapro and Xanax will be in your forties.

You’ll romanticize literally everything that happened before you were 30.

You’ll stop eating because you’re hungry but to blunt the pain of general existence. Or because Baby Ruths make you feel better than carrots.

You’ll need to learn to talk to girls. Not just at them or about them.

You will reach an age where you think women in their fifties are “cute.”

And an age where your body will suddenly fail you in ways that didn’t existed. Like gallstones. And liver failure. And skin so yellow that people think you’re Ned Flanders’ stunt double.

You’ll eventually realize that your babies are only babies for an incredibly short time. And that most of the time you know them will be as fellow adults.

Some days breaking a half hour sitcom story feels like forever. And everything else literally just flies by.

You’ll fail more than you succeed. And bouncing back from failure will sneakily be your greatest success.

You may knowingly experience pain because it’s better to feel the panoply of human emotions than it is to band-aid over them with bong hits and Peanut M & M’s.

And with any luck, you may someday reach a point where you don’t give a shit what anyone thinks about. You’ll present yourself to the world as you honestly are without trying to put up a facade of success or well-being. And you’ll be okay with that. That, I think, is where true freedom lies. And I can’t wait to get there.

The Surgeon General’s Report on E-Cigarettes: Quitters & Starters

By Dr. Sudip Bose, MD

Jan. 7, 2016 — A report on e-cigarettes released at the end of last year by the US Surgeon General’s office shows a number of risks related to the popular product — particularly regarding young people — that should make them a lot less popular, but likely won’t. The act of “vaping” is often thought of as a safer alternative to smoking, but that’s not necessarily the case. Here are the dangers and potential dangers people should be paying attention to related to e-cigarettes:

The Debate

E-cigs are at the center of one of the most contentious debates in public health. The availability and appeal of using e-cigs as an alternative to smoking cigarettes has been growing quickly over the years for both those who are new to smoking, as an introductory product, and to those who are trying to quit smoking, who see it as a more “healthful” way of trying to kick the smoking habit.

2017-01-09-1483945232-8748619-drsudipboseoncapitolhill.jpg

However, e-cigs don’t solve the nicotine problem at all. Yes, e-cigs eliminate tar, and yes, e-cigs eliminate the tobacco — both dangerous elements to one’s health. And that’s definitely good. But what they do not eliminate is the critical element of nicotine. Nicotine is one of the most highly addictive substances on earth. It’s presented in a liquid and then vaporized form in an e-cig; you inhale through the e-cig, and as you inhale, the nicotine and other substances in the liquid are atomized and absorbed into your lungs. The nicotine in an e-cig is a lot more concentrated and potent.

New Users

For those who have never smoked and who are interested in the experience, e-cigs are an entry-level product that have been promoted and marketed as being safe. They’re not. They may be “safer” than cigarettes, but that’s only by degree.

While a new “vaper” isn’t exposed to the other substances of tar and tobacco such as are found in a normal cigarette, he or she is getting concentrated and more potent doses of nicotine. That’s not good. And we’re seeing younger and younger people trying these. Also not good. The e-cig “e-liquid,” which is what produces the vapor that users inhale and exhale, are marketed in an array of flavors that appeal to younger users — junior high and high school age kids — they’re available for order online, and you’re getting addicted right away to the habit of using nicotine. The flavors available boggle the imagination: bubble gum, banana, “Mother’s MIlk,” blueberry-lemon, banana cinnamon nutbread, pomegranate, strawberry — it goes on endlessly. These teenagers — and even younger children — are getting addicted early, which could lead to smoking, and e-cigs can easily become a gateway to trying and developing an addiction to more serious drugs. Addiction correlates to crime. People need to feed their habit, they break into homes to steal things to resell, they commit robberies on the streets, all to get money to feed their addiction. Ultimately they make some very poor choices and place themselves in very dangerous situations.

We may see less cancer as a result of e-cig use, because the tobacco and tar are gone. But we won’t be able to tell that for years or decades to come. Remember there are other chemicals mixed in with the nicotine in the solution that also could cause cancer down the road. The liquid that becomes vaporized in e-cigs, which you inhale and exhale in a cloud of vapor, contains not only nicotine but an array of other substances, such as propylene glycol, glycerine, flavorings and sometimes components like diacetyl, acetyl propionyl, benzaldehyde and the less-threatening sounding vanillin. We know that dactyl produces popcorn lung — a scarring of the tiny air sacs in the lungs resulting in the thickening and narrowing of the airways.

Quitting Smoking

If you’re trying to quit smoking, remember the key drug, nicotine, is still very much available through an e-cig and at much higher, concentrated doses. So while you will be eliminating the tar and tobacco of a cigarette, you’re amping up the accessibility of nicotine. That’s not exactly a great way to wean yourself from something harmful — to add more of it to your system.

We’re seeing a lot more nicotine toxicity. For example, little babies we see in the emergency room — sometimes they get a hold of a cigarette and they chew on it, which is usually not that harmful. But if they get a hold of an e-cigarette and ingest some of that liquid nicotine, which again is so concentrated in an e-cig form, we see nausea, vomiting seizures, paralysis — bad things.

Being that the nicotine is one of the most addictive substances, it’s not really helping you quit your addiction, it’s not the path to accomplishing that. And we’re seeing younger and younger people getting into it.

An Alternative to Smoking

There is a rising “connoisseur-ship” that’s evolved in the world of vaping in which vapers discuss vaping in the same way that wine aficionados discuss the nuances of whatever wine they are drinking. That’s great, but that doesn’t lessen the dangers outlined above.

Are vapers listening? Not really. In 2013, e-cigarette-related sales were $ 1.7 billion, which was double what they were in 2012. In 2015, those sales had risen to $ 2.9 billion. Many tobacco manufacturers also are in the e-cigarette game. More than 250 e-cig brands are on the market.

Perhaps this Surgeon General’s report will help refocus attention on the dangers of e-cigarettes and give people enough of a reason to take a pass at the growing trend of vaping.

Puerto Rican Cookery has become the standard reference on traditional native cookery (cocina criolla). New Chair Of Senate Indian Affairs Committee Wanted DAPL Protests Shut Down

The new chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Indian Affairs is a man who has placed himself squarely in opposition to the Native American-led movement to fight the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.

John Hoeven (R-N.D.) said in a statement Thursday he was “honored” to be serving as chairman and noted that he planned to make “economic growth” a priority. He announced his election in a joint statement with committee Vice Chairman Sen. Tom Udall (D-N.M.).

The committee’s purpose is to “study the unique problems of American Indian, Native Hawaiian, and Alaska Native peoples and to propose legislation to alleviate these difficulties,” its website states.

But Hoeven has condemned protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline, a movement led by members of the Standing Rock Sioux and joined by other Native Americans and allies from across the country. Protesters say a leak would be catastrophic for the drinking water of the Standing Rock Sioux and others, and argue that the construction violates an 1851 treaty with the U.S. government.

In November, Hoeven characterized the protests as sometimes “violent” and called for President Barack Obama to approve the pipeline’s final easement and put an end to the demonstrations.

Of course, there are Native Americans, including some members of the Standing Rock Sioux, who do not agree with the protesters. But the fight against the pipeline is arguably the most prominent Native American-led social movement in recent history, and the protests have become emblematic of the fight for Native American rights.

Hoeven’s views on the issue are also at odds with Udall’s. After federal authorities announced a halt to the pipeline’s construction in December, Udall applauded the decision.

“Over the last seven months, thousands of people, including Indian nations from New Mexico and across North America, have demonstrated their deep concern about the lack of consultation by the federal government and the potential environmental hazard this pipeline poses for the water,” Udall said in a statement.

While many people celebrated the decision to halt construction as a major victory, it’s not totally clear what the future holds for the project, especially with incoming president-elect Donald Trump. Last month, Trump’s transition team said he supported the pipeline and would review options when he takes office.

10 Powerful Ways To Create Your Own Happiness

2017-01-05-1483642794-489505-PowerfulWaysToCreateYourOwnHappinessHP.jpeg

Happiness comes in so many different forms that it can be hard to grasp. Unhappiness, on the other hand, is easy to identify; you know it when you see it, and you definitely know when it’s taken ahold of you.

And let’s face it, happiness and work do not always go hand in hand. A 2013 Gallup study, which reported data from more than 180 million people, found that just 13% of us consider ourselves to be “happily engaged at work.”

Those who do rate themselves as happy are 36% more motivated, six times more energized, and twice as productive as their unhappy counterparts.

Happiness actually has less to do with your circumstances than you might think. A University of Illinois study found that people who earn the most (more than $ 10 million annually) are only a smidge happier than the average Joes and Janes who work for them, and psychologists from the University of California found that genetics and life circumstances only account for about 50% of a person’s happiness. The rest is up to you.

Life circumstances have little to do with happiness because much happiness is under your control–the product of your habits and your outlook on life. Happiness is synthetic–you either create it, or you don’t.

When it comes to making yourself happy, you need to learn what works for you. Once you discover this, everything else tends to fall into place. And making yourself happy doesn’t just improve your performance; it’s also good for your health.

A critical skill set that happy people tend to have in common is emotional intelligence (EQ). At TalentSmart, we’ve tested the EQs of more than a million people and know what makes high EQ people tick. So, we went digging until we found some great ways that emotionally intelligent people create their own happiness.

1. They don’t obsess over things they can’t control. It’s good to know how the Brexit might affect your country’s markets or that your company could merge with its largest competitor, but there’s a big difference between understanding these larger forces and worrying about them. Happy people are ready and informed, but they don’t allow themselves to fret over things that are beyond their control.

2. They choose their battles wisely.
Emotionally intelligent people know how important it is to live to fight another day. In conflict, unchecked emotion makes you dig your heels in and fight the kind of battle that can leave you severely damaged and unhappy for some time to come. When you read and respond to your emotions, you’re able to choose your battles wisely and only stand your ground when the time is right.

3. They get enough sleep. I’ve beaten this one to death over the years and can’t say enough about the importance of sleep to improving your mood, focus, and self-control. When you sleep, your brain literally recharges, removing toxic proteins that accumulate during the day as byproducts of normal neuronal activity. This ensures that you wake up alert and clear-headed. Your energy, attention, and memory are all reduced when you don’t get enough quality sleep. Sleep deprivation also raises stress hormone levels on its own, even without a stressor present. Happy people make sleep a priority, because it makes them feel great and they know how lousy they feel when they’re sleep deprived.

4. They heed their moral compass. Crossing moral boundaries in the name of success is a sure-fire path to unhappiness. Violating your personal standards creates feelings of regret, dissatisfaction, and demotivation. Know when to stand your ground and express dissent when someone wants you to do something that you know you shouldn’t. When you’re feeling confused, take some time to review your values and write them down. This will help you to locate your moral compass.

5. They exercise during the week.
Getting your body moving for as little as 10 minutes releases GABA, a soothing neurotransmitter that also limits impulsivity. A University of Bristol study showed that people who exercised on workdays reported improvements in time management, mood, and performance. The benefits of exercise always outweigh the time lost in its pursuit.

6. They have a growth mindset.
People’s core attitudes fall into one of two categories: a fixed mindset or a growth mindset. With a fixed mindset, you believe you are who you are and you cannot change. This creates problems when you’re challenged, because anything that appears to be more than you can handle is bound to make you feel hopeless and overwhelmed. People with a growth mindset believe that they can improve with effort. This makes them happier because they are better at handling difficulties. They also outperform those with a fixed mindset because they embrace challenges, treating them as opportunities to learn something new.

7. They clear the clutter.
I don’t need to remind you of how much time you spend at work. Take a good look at your workspace. You should create a space that’s soothing and uplifting. Whether it’s a picture of your family, a plant, or an award that you’re proud of, display them prominently to keep them on your mind. Get rid of the junk and clutter that hold no significance and do nothing positive for your mental state.

8. They lend a hand.
Taking the time to help your colleagues not only makes them happy, but it also makes you happy. Helping other people gives you a surge of oxytocin, serotonin, and dopamine, all of which create good feelings. In a Harvard study, employees who helped others were 10 times more likely to be focused at work and 40% more likely to get a promotion. The same study showed that people who consistently provided social support were the most likely to be happy during times of high stress. As long as you make certain that you aren’t overcommitting yourself, helping others is sure to have a positive influence on your happiness.

9. They let their strengths flow.
A University of Chicago study of peak performance found that people who were able to reach an intense state of focus, called flow, reaped massive benefits. Flow is the state of mind in which you find yourself completely engrossed in a project or task, and you lose awareness of the passage of time and other external distractions. Flow is often described as an exhilarating state in which you feel euphoria and mastery simultaneously. The result is not just happiness and productivity but also the development of new skills through a heightened state of learning. The key to reaching flow lies in organizing your tasks such that you have immediate and clear goals to pursue that play to your strengths. As you begin working on these tasks, your focus increases along with your feelings of adequacy. In time, you reach a flow state, in which productivity and happiness flourish. Set clear goals each day and experiment with task order until you find the secret formula that gets you flowing.

10. They believe the best is yet to come.
Don’t just tell yourself that the best is yet to come–believe it. Having a positive, optimistic outlook on the future doesn’t just make you happier; it also improves your performance by increasing your sense of self-efficacy. The mind has a tendency to magnify past pleasure to such a great degree that the present pales in comparison. This phenomenon can make you lose faith in the power of the future to outdo what you’ve already experienced. Don’t be fooled. Believe in the great things the future has in store.

Bringing It All Together

Applying these strategies won’t just improve your happiness at work; most of them will also improve your emotional intelligence. Pick those that resonate with you and have fun with them.

What makes you happy? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me.

Steve Martin, Carrie Fisher, and the Male Response to Female Beauty

In response to the news that Carrie Fisher had died, Steve Martin shared on Facebook the vivid memory of the impact Ms. Fisher had had on him nearly forty years before (presumably when he’d seen her portraying Princess Leia in the first Star Wars movie).

“When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen,” Martin began.

As has been widely reported, Steve Martin’s tribute was publicly attacked by some as “sexist.” “Remember Carrie Fisher for her talent, her feminism, her commentary on mental health,” New York Magazine wrote, “– not for the way she looked.” A Twitter user’s comment captured the essence of these attacks: “”Seriously @SteveMartinToGo quit being such a jerk for thinking Carrie Fisher was beautiful and saying so on the occasion of her death.”

Although Steve Martin had his defenders, nonetheless, in the face of the attacks, he retreated and deleted his posting.

More needs to be said about how wrong-headed are those attacks.

Let me begin by acknowledging that women have much to complain about the manner in which men relate to them regarding their looks and their bodies. And they have much to complain about how men fail to relate to them– as full human beings worthy of respect. Particularly in the aftermath of an election to the presidency of a man we have heard boasting of sexually assaulting women, the injured feelings of women whose humanity has been denied and abused warrants acknowledgment and consideration.

So the following is not intended as a counter-attack on those women who, triggered perhaps by his rhapsodic comment about Carrie Fisher’s beauty, attacked Steve Martin. It is, rather, an attempt to clarify what there is in men’s response to womanly beauty that deserves to be honored, not condemned.

“Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen.” One can hear a fullness of heart in Steve Martin’s statement. He is recalling an experience of inspiration–a breathing in of spirit in response to something that touched him deeply, a pleasurable recollection of being moved by beauty.

I imagine most men can identify with that appreciation of womanly beauty. And it’s a good thing that we are that way. That response is deeply wired into our nature. It is a response that has for eons been life-serving, and life-enhancing.

The evolutionary process that has shaped us has seen to it that, by nature, we feel the feelings that help keep us alive and serve to pass our form of life forward into the future. It is good that the male human is moved, as Steve Martin was, by the perception of female beauty. That is no small part of how it has come to pass that there are people on this earth.

It has been well-established scientifically that what the human male finds beautiful in the human female is correlated with health, fertility, and advantageous genetic endowment. The perpetuation of life is vital business, and it is life-serving for us to appreciate what will help us continue our kind.

Appreciation of this sort connects with our fundamental being at a level way deeper than our liking someone’s “commentary on mental health.” That sort of thing can be real, but it is most unlikely to produce a memory that is still resonant forty years later.

Steve Martin was accused of responding to Carrie Fisher purely in physical terms. But I doubt that’s true at all. We humans do not just mate, we also form relationships as lovers. We are wired not just to produce offspring, but also to form families that can nurture our offspring through their prolonged period of dependency. Heart and soul are also involved, and when we see one another, we see more than just the purely physical.

Carrie Fisher was a woman of real spirit, and that quality of her being was entirely visible in her portrayal of the highly spirited character, Princess Leia. I would wager that when Steve Martin found Carrie Fisher beautiful, he was responding also to that spirit.

That was certainly the case the moment I first met my own beloved, April, more than thirty years ago. As she walked toward me on that afternoon in Rock Creek Park in Washington (on April 21, 1984), I saw her physical loveliness. (Not beauty-queen beautiful, but certainly pleasing to the eye even at that level.) But what captivated me immediately was a beauty that was both visible and at the level of the spirit.

Here’s how I put it two and a half years later, in the vow that I’d composed for our wedding. Describing her eyes as “like an open blue sky,” I said, “I saw in that first moment that your face is a clear window of your brave and beautiful soul.”

I continue to be moved by that beauty at moments that are, thankfully, not at all rare. Indeed, the moments that I’ve been most deeply moved by womanly beauty have been in recent years with April, who is now in her sixties. It is part of what I call “the sacred space of lovers.” And the experience of the heightening of my perception of such beauty illustrates the wisdom in the question asked by that old song: “Do I love you because you are beautiful? Or are you beautiful because I love you?”

The connections between the perception of beauty and the feeling of the open heart are complex. Steve Martin, I imagine, was not coming from any less-than-human “sexist” place in his perception of Carrie Fisher. I imagine that, back when he was a young man and he saw that beauty, had Steve Martin been given the opportunity to sit across the table from the young woman he had appreciated, he would have treated her as endearingly as he knew how to. If “sexism” implies some sort of lesser treatment, I doubt how he beheld Carrie Fisher would have been sexist in the least.

Men are supposed to appreciate women, and it all begins with first sight.

I am still moved also by the beauty I see in other women. Experiences of beauty – in general – are important to me. I am moved by the beauty of the music of Bach and Mozart. Moved, too, by the sight of the trees’ spring leaves emerging in the valley and ascending the slopes toward our house on the ridge. But nothing moves me more profoundly than womanly beauty, and the way movie stars are cast suggests that looking at such beauty is a pleasure that is pretty nigh universal.

I’m sure Steve Martin would affirm that his memory of seeing that “most beautiful creature” is a pleasurable one. Beholding womanly beauty is pleasurable for the men I know, and thus this response is life-enhancing as well as life-serving.

It does not diminish in the least that sacred space between April and me that I appreciate womanly beauty wherever I see it. As I see it, our being lovers is more than just a connection between her as a specific human woman and me as a specific human man. It is also a representation of that ancient reality of woman and man coming together in love, as lovers.

As Leonard Cohen put it in his song, “That’s No Way to Say Good-bye”:

Yes many loved before us
I know we are not new
In city and in forest
They smile like me and you

I love April not only for being her, but also for being the embodiment of Woman in my life. Did I not appreciate “woman,” I’d appreciate April the less.

That a man should respond to the beauty of woman is a sign of life’s flowering in him. Just as I would wish for every man to see in his beloved some substantial piece of the beauty that Steve Martin saw in Carrie Fisher, so would I wish for every man the capacity to see representatives of such beauty in the world around him.

The love of womanly beauty, and of the beautiful qualities that can be conveyed in that visible beauty, partakes of the sacred in the human realm.

Steve Martin’s recollection of Carrie Fisher’s beauty deserves to be celebrated, not silenced..

Andy Schmookler, who has spent the past dozen years warning about the destructive force that has been rising on the American right, will launch this spring a new series–not on the brokenness, but on a dimension of wholeness — with the title, “The Sacred Space of Lovers.”

RBG Writes Personal Note To Girl Who Dressed Up As Her For Superhero Day

A few weeks ago, we met Michele, the 8-year-old girl who eschewed Marvel and DC to dress up as Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg for her school’s Superhero Day.

Now Michele has received a response from The Notorious RBG herself, and she couldn’t be happier.

Ginsburg’s assistant had reached out to the family shortly after their story went viral to let them know that RBG had seen the photo of Michele in her costume and to ask for their home address.

The note from Ginsburg, which arrived last night, read, “Dear Michele: You look just like me! May you continue to thrive on reading and learning. Every good wish, Ruth Bader Ginsburg.”

Michele’s mom, Krista Threefoot, told HuffPost that her daughter was “super duper excited!” to receive the note. “When I read it, I felt really happy because she said I looked just like her. It was really special because she wrote it by hand,” Michele told her mom.

Ginsburg also included a quote about the power of reading.

Excited to show her teacher, Michele took the letter to school with her Friday, where her math teacher took time out of class to read the letter and teach a lesson about the Supreme Court.

Michele may have even inspired a new trend ― now several of her classmates want to be “real” superheroes next year, including Bill Gates and Hillary Clinton.

Despite being a little overwhelmed by all the attention, Mom says, “I would really to thank Justice Ginsburg for being such an inspiration to all of us, and for being so committed to fighting for equality. This wouldn’t have gone where it has if she weren’t such an admirable person. I also want to thank her for taking the time to make a little girl really, really happy.”

The family plans to write a thank-you note to the justice this weekend.
